Alain had just moved up to Johannesburg March last year. Janine went up that Easter to visit him. He had made up his mind – this was the weekend he was going to propose. He woke up that Saturday and told her that he is going with his brother to get new tyres for his car – the excuse to go and buy the ring. That same afternoon they had lunch at Sandton City. Where Janine decided that this was the perfect time to do some ring browsing! So she dragged Alain, as she puts it, into Browns and just so happened to try on the exact same ring he had purchased that morning already, with Alain all the while, trying to avoid the situation. Sunday morning he announced that they were not going to church but rather breakfast instead. He surprised her with a new venue for breakfast telling her that they weren’t going to their conventional breakfast place. At the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens he took out a packet saying “Oh this is your birthday gift and I really hope it fits!” Disguising it a Woolworths packet so one would think that it was clothing. At breakfast Alain ordered champagne and Janine thought “Wow he is really spoiling me! He must have really missed me!” LOL. He maintains that she was clueless the entire time. But she noticed little things that were a bit out of character. Although, not quite putting 2 and 2 together.
Telling the waitress to keep the champagne chilled, Alain lead Janine to the waterfall where he asked a Chinese guy to take some photos. Tipping him off of what is about to happen and that he needed to be ready. It’s here that Alain’s nerves started to get the better of him – clumsily he pulled out a teddy bear out of the packet and gave it to Janine. She noticed that the bear had Browns written on it. As she looked up from the bear and he got down one knee. Nervous and shaking he opened the box upside down that Janine had to tilt her head to see and realised what was happening. Janine jumped into his arms before he even popped the question! He laughed saying “I didn’t even ask you yet” and at the same time relieved because it must be yes with that hug! She then gave him the chance to ask her and without a doubt her answer was YES!!!
As for the Chinese guy, he was amazed as so were a lot of the other people around that congratulated and took photos for them of their awesome proposal.
Their wedding day was filled with family and friends and it was evident in our many correspondence and meetings that family is very important to them.
